API security continues to elevate in terms of awareness and importance in both government and commercial sectors. Organizations need to ensure that their APIs are secure, protected from attacks, abuse, fraud, and data losses. With a multitude of vendors offering products under the umbrella of API security it can be confusing for organizations trying to determine which is represents the best fit for them. Where does one start?
Cequence firmly believes that all aspects of API security must be accounted for – broadly articulated as API discovery, compliance, and protection. You can’t protect what you cannot see, so visibility is a requirement for assessing risk. Knowing which APIs fail to comply with internal standards and industry best practices is key. And of course, not only detecting threats but actively mitigating them at scale is crucial. KuppingerCole’s recently published assessment of the Cequence Security Unified API Protection solution notes:
“Providing comprehensive protection against the broad range of API-specific threats and doing it consistently throughout the whole lifecycle of an API is complex and requires a comprehensive, platform approach, with multiple security solutions operating in a tightly integrated manner that makes them more than just the sum of individual components.”
— Alexei Balaganski, KuppingerCole
The word “platform” gets used, even overused, by vendors describing their offering. Cequence firmly believes that the word matters. Products that are merely sold together do not constitute a platform. There must be a 1 + 1 = 3 aspect. Together, the products must deliver more than they do on their own, and the Cequence Unified API Protection (UAP) platform does exactly that, sharing API inventory between solutions, with common policies, rules, filters, and risk indicators. Of course, this is delivered within a consistent user interface, resulting in rapid time to value when adding additional modules.
“Although Cequence Security has offered a substantial portfolio of API security products before, transitioning from the product suite towards the platform approach signifies the company’s ability to offer an integrated solution for security risks and challenges of protecting APIs at every phase of their lifecycle.”
— Alexei Balaganski, KuppingerCole
The report highlights the strengths of Cequence Security’s UAP platform, including API attack surface discovery, automated API inventory, real-time risk assessment, generative AI, NLP-based capabilities, threat detection, and inline blocking.
